New guidance paper: turning residuals into resources

AquaMinerals and Allied Waters have launched a practical guidance paper to help water-sector organisations move from residuals management towards circular value creation.

AquaMinerals and Allied Waters have published Guidance for Marketing Residuals from the Water Sector, developed in collaboration with KWR. The guidance is intended for drinking water utilities, water authorities and other organisations looking to make more effective use of residual streams, resources and process inputs.

The paper responds to a growing challenge: resources are becoming scarcer, prices are more volatile and international dependencies are increasing. At the same time, utilities and water authorities are expected to operate in a more sustainable and circular way.

Residual streams that were once treated mainly as a cost of disposal are increasingly being recognised as opportunities for reuse, cost reduction, supply-chain resilience and wider societal value. However, many promising initiatives still struggle to move beyond pilots or feasibility studies.

The guidance shows that successful resource recovery is not determined by technology alone. Market development, logistics, quality assurance, governance, regulation and collaboration are often decisive in developing reliable, long-term value chains.

What the guidance helps organisations address

Identify value
Recognise residuals and process inputs that have the potential to be used as resources.
Build value chains
Connect quality, logistics, markets, contracts and governance to develop viable value chains.
Move to implementation
Use practical experience to progress beyond pilot and feasibility stages.

Invitation
Drinking water utilities, water authorities and partners interested in making better use of residual streams are invited to engage with AquaMinerals and Allied Waters, exchange experiences and explore opportunities for circular resource use.
