Terrazzo floor with Groningen calcite pellets

This spring Watercompany Groningen opened a multi-functional central warehouse at the Martenshoek industrial site in Hoogezand. After being radically refurbished, the old Parker Hannifin building began a new life as an ‘industrial building of the future’. With a very special floor.

The building is energy-neutral and its 1664 solar panels meet all of its energy needs. The refurbishment made maximum possible use of renewable materials. This also applied to the magnificent terrazo floor in the building’s entrance, which contains calcite pellets from the Nietap drinking water production site. The company Castellanos turned out to be the perfect partner and installed the floor to everyone’s satisfaction.

 Popular technique

Terrazzo is Italian for terrace. The floors are made of mineral materials; small stones, marble pellets or pellets made from other materials, which are bound by cement, dried and then polished. This flooring technique is a few hundred years old but is still very popular today. It is used in both indoor and outdoor floors, but also for wall cladding.

The addition of circular calcite, and its impact- and scratch-resistance properties, makes the floor an excellent choice for the distribution centre. Watercompany Groningen is the first in the world with its own calcite pellets in its floor.

And not only that… we also think the floor is unbelievably beautiful!
