Lime sludge
Lime sludge consists primarily of the fine fraction, or the carry-over, from the water softening process. It contains mainly calcium carbonate and its dry-matter content is around 20%. Depending of the production process, the sludge can also contain a significant amount of ferric (hydr)oxide, in which case it is usually referred to as iron-lime sludge.
The sludge can be pumped and its colouration ranges from white to red-brown. The material is produced throughout the Netherlands. Its applications include lime fertilisation in agriculture.
The lime sludge has REACH registration and is included in annex Aa of the Fertiliser Law.
