Ferrous sand for clear ditches in the new Blaricum neighbourhood

Yet another new and attractive application for one of our residuals! We will be supplying ferrous sand for the housing construction project De Blaricummermeent, located between the Gooimeer lake and the old village of Blaricum. The 1,000 new homes rise up between water and green spaces, which calls for good water quality. And that’s where AquaMinerals has a role to play.

No green water

Drinking water production plants generate ferrous sand (sand filtration following aeration). Several research projects we’ve done with our partners have shown that the thin layer of iron enveloping the ferrous sand binds phosphorus to it. In consultations with Waternet N.V., a decision was made to use this phosphorus binding agent in the bed of the discharge ditch of the new housing project. The water flows from this ditch to the pumping station and to the ring-ditches. Less phosphorus in the water means less food for algae and thus less algal bloom. This improves the water quality, which is manifested the water’s clarity.

Smink Infra B.V. won the ‘Border-ditch realisation’ commission and contracted AquaMinerals to supply the ferrous sand as a phosphorus binding agent. The project requires about 1,050 tons, to be delivered in three phases in September 2017.

AquaMinerals wishes the future De Blaricummermeent residents lots of pleasure living in a sustainable environment.
